Today, the promised article about the select tools in photoshop cs3. These tools are probably one of the most basic tools in photoshop and there are still several forms of it. Which are these forms and how to use them, when you use one and why these forms are basically important – you will read it in this article.

	What we don't want to explain in this article are concrete tutorials about these select tools, for the beginning a definition of the select tool forms and application tips are enough – even because you can't create great effects in photoshop cs3 only with this select tool.

	However, in this article we only want to concentrate on one of these select tool forms. So this will become a article series and every form will get an own article (even because if not then this article will be too long). As usual, in our articles a small table of contents follows in which we briefly indicate the subjects of this article. It is treated:

 What are generally select tools?

 Which tool variaton is the subject of this article?

 For what do I need this select tool form?

 How do I use the select tool variation?

	What are generally select tools?

	This is quite easy, the select tools in photoshop enable you to select single parts of a picture to edit them, for example: differently than the rest of the picture. Possible effects are: Unsharpness in a certain range and Chroma keying. What these tools are still good for you are able to read up in the part: For what do I need this select tool form?

	Which tool variaton is the subject of this article?

	Today, in the first part of this article series the normal rectangle select tool are introduced and descripbed, you will find a picture of it on the left, accessible it is in the tool windows (in photoshop cs3 the second icon/button) or with the shortcut "M".

	For what do I need this select tool form?

	Now as already in the first part described you can realise different effects with these select tools which only change a part of a picture. Beside effects like the Chroma keying, the soft drawing of skin, unsharpness of picture ranges and the cut of picture ranges, change eye color or change of the vanish color of cars is for example also possible.

	How do I use the select tool variation?

	Quite simply. Either you use the shortcut "M" on your keyboard, or you click the icon to be seen on the left in the toolbar. Immediately you see, with selected selecttool, on the working surface that the mouse pointer changes in a cross. If you hold the mouse button pressed and select a range, then this is just the selected range and ready to edit. You see the selected range with help of the sketched line.

/* Unten */
google_ad_slot = "9581423152";
google_ad_width = 468;
google_ad_height = 60;
// ]]>	Nevertheless, with these tools you are able to do a perfect square select, in addition hold down the shift button and then you can select a range in your picture. You see the difference of both choice kinds in the following picture.

(did you noted the indirectness on michael jackson? ) for the first part, there is not much to say for the beginning - the next articles will follow soon.

	Now I briefly show you how you can generate a gradient in photoshop CS3, purely and simply.

	Like the most of the tutorials on this site it's a:

	Tutorial CS3 Photoshop

	First only the "normal" gradient:

	Here the steps:

	I simply assume the fact that you have already generated a new document, I have one by the size: 50×50 pixel.

	Now you select the gradient tool (shortcut G) and you will see the following menu on the top of photoshop.

	There you click on the white surface, like in this picture:

Now a new window rises, don't wonder because here in the pictures everything
is in german, I use the german version of photoshop. In the picture you have different regulators.

	Here I will show you a picture of the menu, all things I called marks are in relation to this picture:

	On the top, (take a look at the picture mark 1) you can use available gradients, an available load or save a gradient.

	For an easy gradient click on the "arrow". (look at the picture mark 2)

	Now you can select the color at the beginning of the gradient (see the picture mark3).

	I simply select one nice red and now the picture looks as follows:

	Now you are able to select the color for the end of the gradient (look at the picture mark 4).
I've selected a darker red

Now click on "OK" and you have already selected the generated gradient!
Now with pressed mouse button you go from one dot to an other dot so you select the start- and
endpoint of the gradient.

	If you do it like me you will see something like this, and you will receive a gradient like this:

	Now you have a nice gradient.

	More info:
If you want to have a perfectly straight gradient you have to hold the SHIFT Button on your keyboard
during you select the start and endpoint of the gradient. So you will receive a perfectly straight gradient

	That's all!

	You have a nice gradient.

	Have a nice day

<!--
google_ad_client = "pub-5272301859403381";
/* simple_gradient_unten */
google_ad_slot = "5533248768";

Here is one videotutorial you should have seen. It’s german but it has english “subtitles”, enjoy this effect – it’s very easy!
You can call this effect: Pseudo HDR effect
or originally translated:Photoshop – make more color intense of an image

All these tutorials are not only suitable for beginners, others like advanced users can even work with these tutorials. Although the effects often seems difficult, nevertheless, these rather feel well to copy – thanks for the good instructions on the respective pages.

An explanation of the different tools in photoshop follows soon.
Many greetings!
